Review of Ghajini

December 26, 2008 at 2:20 pm (movies)

Masala is back and see who’s serving it… Aamir Khan! Expect the best now. Ghajini may actually be a new age ode to all those masala flicks full of comedy, drama and love that thankfully we’ve stopped growing up with! But since the masala is sprayed upon a racy, tight and non-chronological script – it works.

Its an action movie and the best thing about it is, other than Aamir’s dehshat, the not so over-the-top fight scenes. Brilliant execution is written all over the film. If You Can’t Impress the Audience with Anything Else, Then Confuse Them. The story is full of unfinished diaries, blemished goons, sexy medicos which are confused about their loyalities. Ok… it’s a good past time movie.

But it fails to generate the type of hysteria a masterpiece like Jaane Tu, Taare Zameen Par or RDB generated. It’s another RNBDJ – superduper hit, but not quite up there at the pinnaccle of filmdom.

My Desi Girl, My Desi Girl !!!

December 24, 2008 at 2:02 pm (Dance)

A lot of things happened leading to the Freshers party. Accepting the fact that it’s impossible to write about them in detail, i’ll just enumerate them – #Studies went for an unholy but quiet exit in the last week.

# I was a part of two dance groups – Trance Extended and Ravaniya(with Akanksha Bansal, Insia and Ashish). Both the groups performed decently well, but my dance on Desi Girl with Insia put the house on fire. Thumka lagaike she’ll rock your world… my desi girl… my desi girl…

#It took the services of two choreographers to put together the four songs in Ravaniya.

# I was the Master of Comparing, my Mistress being Manasi. Pun unintended.

# I hate people who have no talent, no confidence but have money and muscle power belittling innocent people. I hope they rot in hell. I hope somebody shoots them in the open.

# I gave away the Mr Fresher title to one Siddharth at a flashy ceremony. Memories came rushing back.

# No more dance rehearsals, no more dance practices, no more catfights, no more salsa stunts. Tum ho toh, gaata hai dil/ tum nahi to geet kahan?….

Am i nonviolent. Or am i?

December 16, 2008 at 4:04 pm (Uncategorized)

There are times, not too often but there nevertheless, when i feel helpless. All the confidence that my genes and environment have squeezed into me seems fake and just namesake. During these moments, i start analysing my life objectively. And, no need to mention that i never have decided if it’s meaningful to exist at all.

Paradoxically it’s nothing big and long lasting that triggers my taking out a ‘negative’ of otherwise technicolored life. Out of these trivial happenings, i draw conclusions and generalisation about my attitude and life. I agree that it’s no use demoralising myself over these things… but i can’t help it when 1. i feel politically overpowered 2. emotionally trampled upon by people i rely upon emotionally 3. sombering down my aggression in order to respect my friendship with someone. I can’t help it – everybody’s head is pre-programmed for harboring greed, want of love and loyality; and, mutiny against injustice. There’s a world of difference between i-am-non violent and i-am-weak, but not so much difference between i-am-courageous and i-want-to-be-courageous.

Everybody wants his existence to be accounted for, his presence greetedand absence felt. Perhaps what i need to understand is that there’s not enough space in this world to accomodate everybody’s sphere of desires, which are always expanding. Perhaps what i need to learn is to focus on the basic reasons of my being where i am, and ignore everything that can be ignored. Or, yes, perhaps i need to cherish the better moments.

Review of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

December 12, 2008 at 2:40 pm (movies) (, , )

Directed by Aditya Chopra

It’s not too often that the head honcho of nation’s most succesful but turbulent film production house comes down to direct a movie post an 8 year long hiatus. It’s not too often that the first SRK movie of the year is directed by the very same head honcho. Expectations : sky is the limit. End result : sky, indeed, is the limit!

Backed with a solid many-dimensional story, RNBDJ works as soon as it starts. As if paying respect to the rumor mills, there are, indeed, only three characters and SRK  is married to Anushka. But henceforth unfolds a narrative that travers umpteen terrains viz humor, drama and emotions. SRK playes with elan and confidence the two roles which are poles apart. Anushka may not be the most beautiful woman on earth, but she acts decently well. The real hero of the movie is its script. Tight, like Raj Kapoor’s jeans.

There’s hardly any flip side to the movi if you ignore the slight slackening of pace in the second hour. But the many faceted climax makes up for everything. The music looks decent when juxtaposed against the film’s little town setting. And one point – background score is awesome.

A winner of a movie. But it takes a lifetime to reach DDLJ levels… and we know Adi has many more working years left in him.

Just Hold It

December 10, 2008 at 5:00 pm (College)

Stop slipping away, time. How strange and interesting that any group of people thrown together can have unlimited fun, calling themselves friends. And not only fun.

How strange and interesting that fun is not everything. Not even friends. I let my confused mind resort to the safe havens of philosophies which say the finality and absoluteness of time and life is unattainable(at least at 20!).

There are these little pieces of life you pick up from here and there and make a whole life. So many stories, so many characters. And still one never stops yearning for more stories and more characters.

But sometimes, just once in a while, you feel the caravan of time and life should stop, so that the stories and characters stay with you and don’t go away. For me, now is the time.
