Review of the book Bombay Rains Bombay Girls
Author : Anirban Bose
A debutant author puts many things into his first outing. It’s like his child. He pours himself into it and paints its lines with his blood and sweat. Anirban Bose is no different. The book’s about medical students studying in Grant Medical College, Mumbai and folks, that is a good enough reason to pick it up.
It might have easily been a cross between Five Point Someone and Doctors(Erich Segal), had it had a little more conviction(like the former) and memorable characters. Although the protagonist Adi rises from his small town, almost puerile, tendencies towards college stardom, the book loses steam constantly. Although it may pass off as a fairly decent first novel, but in places it gets trapped into the pit of mediocrity thanks to the author’s attempt at weaving too many plots into a readable novel. Talk about first novel blues! Also, the attempt at pleasing-all-kinds-of-readers proves to be the Achilles’s heel in the narrative.
On the brighter side, the language and the medical environment fetch browny points for the author. The college years are nicely described, saving the reader the burden of boring details. But what eactly accentuates the book’s appeal is the long but interesting climax. Kind of makes up for the average middle part.
Bottomline : Go for it, especially the medicos.
Emergency rescue operation
Reality check…. this blog is not a Movie Reviewer’s blog. It is a personal blog belonging to a medical student. Then what turns it into something it’s not : may be lack of things to post, and desire of the blogger to post something; anything. Ha!
Recently i’ve not been able to get my thinking streamlined. I started talking to the ever elusive one, but have not been able to carry forward the good starting. Fingers and all other crossable things are eternally crossed. I really was blabbering in front of her.
Our Book Club started its operations on war scale. Our latest buy was The Hungry Tide by Amitav Ghosh.
I saw 4 movies in the last 7 days and now i’m feeling guilty. Dasvidaniya was a good boring type movie, 2.5/5. But Vinay pathak rocked.
Fresher’s coming back again, and this time we’re on the better side of the fence – we’re the host. Dance preparations have started, like in old days. The Jhoom group broke up, but two others cropped up.
Review of Yuvvraaj
2/5
Yuvvraaj is so disjointed and confused that when, in the second hour, it looks like getting into some shape, Anil Kapoor starts having hots for Kat. Perhaps one needs to sit through this three hour semi-ordeal to understand how insignificant and silly this Kapoor-Kat angle is.
Yuvvraaj does not work. What drew me to the movie first day was the name Subhash Ghai. The movie starts off quite well with the hummable song ’Tu hi meri Dost hai’, but follows a downward spiral since then. The narrative struggles to capture the viewer’s attention, although Salman’s star presence threatens to break out of the silver screen.
The biggest letdown in this magnum-opus is its patchy, rickety script. Even though the storyline is ambitious and suits Ghai’s imagination of a stately, princely tale. But what comes out is only the stately mansions, opulent architecture, magnificent mountains and huge paintings. Sometimes it gets so messed up that songs don’t help either. The saving grace is the last fifteen minutes of the movie.
Performances : I’m letdown by Salman. Kat is okay. Anil stands out in a well-measured act. And Boman Irani – was he funny? was he angry?
Music : if u still need an excuse to see this movie, then it’s ARR’s music. The feel of the whole audi resonating with disciplined and melodious violins, keyboards and mandolins is beautiful. ARR is in his elements this time(when is he not?). Though i still hate Shano Shano.
Bottomline : Avoid. May be see the other Yuvraj(Singh) hammering down the English.
Review of Dostana
Karan Johar returns to producergiri post a misadventure called KANK, giving the director’s cap to friend and debutant Tarun Mansukhani. He chooses a subject, which is probably close to his heart(wink, wink) and comes out with … a full-on entertainer and a winner of a movie.
Dostana goes all out to entertain you. Some of you may heve never laughed as much as you’ll laugh during this movie. It’s not rib tickling, it’s rib bursting type of humor. The movie might run the risk of offending the homosexuals, but well, worth the risk! The climax is wild and raises more than a few eyebrows.
Music suits the seamless flow of the movie. “Maa da laadla” is going to be a rage. The chorography of all the songs is outstanding.
Speaking of the cast, Abhishek elicits the maximum amount of laughter. But it’s Priyanka which stands out. She is jawdroppingly s-e-x-y and delivers her part with finnesse and poise. She looks riveting in Desi Girl. Kirron Kher is funny too, as usual. But Bobby Deol looks confused. He’s the worst looking guy in the middle of a sexy movie.
The bottomline is : it’s going to be one of the biggest movies of 2008. Don’t miss it.

The Three Bollywood Biggies
Three big movies are lined up for release in bollywood. I’m sure at least one of them will make it super big. Here are the names, and why i look forward to them.
3. Yuvvraaj : The showman Subhash Ghai is back! This time with Salman and Katrina. But that’s not what excites me. It’s the AR Rehman + Gulzar + Alka Yagnik + Sony Nigam + Beethovenish setup. Looks like good old times are back in bollywood.
2. Ghajini : Aamir! Aamir!
1. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi : Dunno if it’s YRF or SRK or Adi Chopra(it’s him, finally) … but there’s something out there which is gonna get masses into a frenzy. Dec 12!!!!!!!!!
Salman vs Aamir vs Shah Rukh. Subhash Ghai vs the Chopras.
Surely there’s a lot to look forward to.
